Collection 01

At Ruobing, stillness, elegance and permanence sit at the center of our philosophy. Born from the desire to preserve traditional techniques and celebrate ancient craftsmanship, Ruobing crafts collections that combine age-old processes with modern sensibilities.

Xiang Yun Sha

Collection 01 is made entirely from Xiang Yun Sha. A silk dyed through an ancient Chinese process using iron-rich river mud, the juice of the shǔ liàng root, and rays of sunlight. The result is a fabric that shifts in light - cool and weightless against the skin, with a depth of colour that deepens with every wear.

A Fabric shaped by Time, Nature and Sunlight

Xiang Yun Sha is an incredibly rare silk, native to the Shunde district of Guangdong province in Southern China.

The name refers to a traditional dyeing technique that relies purely on natural elements. During the 1500’s fishermen discovered that coating their nets in juice from the shu liang root, drying them in the sun, and then coating them in mud from the Pearl River produced a remarkably durable fabric with a striking black-and-orange finish.

To make Xiang Yun Sha successfully, silk artisans repeat an arduous cycle of rinsing, drying, and dyeing over months during Southern China's high summer heat. The longer the process is repeated, the richer the color becomes.
